There are several ways to remove graffiti from concrete, and one such example is sandblasting. When concrete is sandblasted, abrasive material is propelled onto the surface using compressed air. The sand particles weather away paint, restoring the concrete’s original appearance. These particles can even pierce into the pores of concrete, making it an effective way to remove even the deepest molecules of paint.
There are a few key downsides to sandblasting. Since the technique relies on abrasive materials, it means that it will weather your concrete, leaving it rougher and more prone to damage. Additionally, if you inhale any of these particles, it can irritate your throat and lungs. Despite these disadvantages, many people swear by sandblasting. Perhaps it’s the right choice for you, too.
Method #2: Graffiti Removal Chemicals
Graffiti is stubborn and sticks to concrete like glue. However, with graffiti removal chemicals, you’ll weaken spray paint so it can be more easily removed. How do these chemicals work? First, you apply a generous helping of the substance to the concrete. Then, you wait ten to fifteen minutes for spray paint to be broken down. Finally, you remove the weakened paint from the concrete, typically by brushing or scrubbing it away.
There are many graffiti removal chemicals available for your consideration. We’ve included a bulleted list of some of your options below.
- Solvent-Based Cleaners. These cleaners dissolve graffiti into liquid paint so it can be easily removed. Common solvents include acetone, xylene, and toluene.
- Alkaline-Based Cleaners. These cleaners use strong bases, such as sodium hydroxide, to break down paint so it can be easily scrubbed away.
- Eco-Friendly Cleaners. While not always the most effective option, these cleaners are better for the environment, making them a good choice for the eco-conscious.
Remember to always take caution when handling these cleaners. In many cases, they will damage your skin upon contact. So don’t touch these substances. Make sure they are applied to your concrete and nothing else!
Method #3: Pressure Washing Graffiti
As you might have guessed, this is our favorite way of removing graffiti from exterior surfaces. Pressure washing generally won’t cause abrasion to your concrete, and it doesn’t require the use of potentially dangerous chemicals, either. Instead, it relies on one of the most reliable forces Mother Nature has to offer: good old-fashioned water. At JayBee Pressure Washing, we use a pressure washer to highly pressurize this water, making it very effective at surface cleaning.
To remove graffiti from concrete, you can use as much as 3,500 PSI. That’s because concrete is a highly durable material. It can withstand pressurized water with ease! We recommend that you position yourself about a foot away from the concrete. Then, clean the area in a row-by-row fashion. You should be able to effectively remove all graffiti this way.
Prevent Further Graffiti With These Tips
Want to know the most effective way of getting rid of concrete graffiti? Preventing it from happening in the first place! After all, it’s commonly said that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” We’ve included some tips below for your consideration.
- Remove graffiti quickly after it appears. When there is graffiti on your concrete, get rid of it fast. If you don’t, it signals to other vandals that graffiti is tolerated on your property. Send out this message, and it won’t be long before your concrete is like a community coloring book.
- Keep the area well-illuminated. Vandalization is more likely to occur in dark areas where the suspects can slink into the night. By investing in some motion-detected flood lights, you’ll prevent vandals from ruining your concrete—even when it’s pitch-black and nearly impossible to see outside.
